Latitude and Longitude

We have been studying latitude and longitude in geography class. This concept is a bit abstract and can be confusing for Nine year olds. We played a game today to help the students better understand how to use latitude and longitude to locate places on a map.

Crow vs. Canary Soccer

Last week the girls enjoyed their first Crow vs. Canary experience-a soccer game. There were actually three games going on at once, and the teams rotated so that they got to play three other teams. The girls were good at applying all of the rules and skills they learned in PE class. The result of the day was a tie, and everyone had a great time!

Happy Halloween!

We had a great time parading around campus and getting in the Halloween spirit!

Greek Fashion show

On Wednesday the Ninth Age girls participated in a Greek gods and goddesses fashion show. Each girl was assingned a god or goddess to dress up as and speak about. They learned some new information, not just about their own god or goddess, but about all if them. This was a fun activity, and the girls did a super job!

Last week the girls enjoyed their first meeting with their Buddies in 6-B. This will be a year long partnership, and the girls are especially excited because this is their first opportunity to be the older buddy in this type of pairing. We look forward to lots of fun activities this year!

Our Lives as Cave Girls

The girls of 9-A recently finished writing a composition titled My Life as a Cave Girl. To celebrate, a few of the girls dressed up like cave girls and shared their essays with the class. This is always a fun activity in the beginning of the year!

A Tour of the Classroom

The girls made this video so to give their parents a tour of the classroom on Parents' Night. Everyone enjoyed describing a certain part of 9-A on film!

More Pictures From the First Week

A Great First Week!

We have had a fantastic first week of school in 9-A! In order to get to know each other better, each girl brought in something she was proud of to share. Here are some pictures of that activity. There are a few more pictures from today that I will post early next week.

Welcome Back!

Welcome to a new year! We are going to have lots of fun in 9-A. On the first day of school each girl will get an accordion folder to help her organize her papers. It will go home each night and come back to school each morning. The girls should work on labeling their accordion folders at home this week. Here is a picture of what the labels should look like:

Happy Summer!

What a great year it's been! We've learned about Ancient Egypt, Greece, and Rome, traveled to the Walters Art Museum, enjoyed a Taylor Swift podcast, performed Olivia Saves the Circus, completed a Biome report and presentation, celebrated birthdays, and played Crow vs. Canary games. We have grown so much this year, and we worked hard but had fun, too! Now it's time to kick back, relax, and enjoy the summer!

Medieval Times

The Ninth Age enjoyed a field trip to Medieval Times on Friday. We ate with our hands and watched jousting while learning about the Middle Ages. What a great way to experience the things we are learning about in history!

Boneless Buffalo Bites and Garlic Bread

Last week we held a friendly competition during composition. The girls each chose a food that they thought they could write descriptively about. Mrs. Bennett and I chose the most descriptive essay from each class and brought in a taste of the foods being described for everyone. Here is a picture of the winners!

Egg Drop

Yesterday 9-A and 9-B participated in the Annual Ninth Age Egg Drop. The girls packed shoeboxes with materials found around the house that they thought would be good protection for an egg. Then they dropped the boxes from the balcony in the girls' gym. Everyone with a surviving egg got to do a second drop. That time they either had to throw their box over the balcony or slam in down from the balcony. The girls will write about the experience in composition class this week.

Sewing Club

A group of Seventh and Eighth Agers come to 9-A after school on Wednesdays for Sewing Club. First we made fringed fleece Ravens scarves and now they are making pink poodle pillows. We have lots of fun!

Idita-read

Monday, March 4, 2013 11:17 AM Posted by Sarah Preston 0 comments

To celebrate the running of the 41st Iditarod, students in 9-A and 9-B will participate in their own race...by reading! We have created a map of the Iditarod checkpoints and the elapsed distance at each checkpoint. The girls will move their sleds one mile for each minute they read. See you in Nome!

Underground Railroad Quilt Squares

As part of our celebration of African American History Month we discussed how quilt squares were used to help people navigate the Underground Railroad. The different squares were symbols that served as reminders. For example, the Flying Geese square was a reminder to follow the geese that would be flying north in the springtime and would not be far from water. The girls made construction paper quilt squares. Didn't they do a great job?! Ask your daughter to identify her square and to tell you the secret code it held!

Costumes!

Today the girls rehearsed in full costume for the first time. They did a great job! We can't wait until next week when the rest of the school and our parents will see the play.

Crow/Canary Basketball

Yesterday the girls participated in the Crows vs. Canaries basketball game. They had a lot of fun demonstrating their shooting, dribbling, and passing skills. Lots of points were scored, and everyone had a great time!

Olivia Saves the Circus: Sneak Peak

9-A and 9-B have been working hard on our Play, Olivia Saves the Circus. The performance will be in mid-February. Here is a sneak peak of one of the songs!
